Regional Central Chilled Water System (continued...)
A $50,000,000 conversion to the regional concept was approved and funds were borrowed to begin a multi-year, phased installation in late 1998. The majority of the work was completed by 2004 with the final phase - construction of an all-new regional plant on South Oak Street . Today four regional plants operate 22 chillers to serve approximately 40,000 tons of campus load. The expected maintenance savings are being realized on a daily basis, as is the reduced energy consumption. It is estimated the central loop has reduced cooling energy consumption more than 20%, even though greater cooling is being provided due to new buildings. Over the next twenty years, the central loop will offer a net $45,000,000 advantage, including the $50,000,000 first costs of system conversion.
