Campus Energy Conservation Initiatives
The University of Illinois’ commitment to achieving
sustained energy and environmental performance
requires an ongoing, integrated and
systematic approach to energy management.
The University currently has several energy conservation
initiatives in the works and is actively
working to find new ways to involve the campus
community in conservation awareness activities.
Completed Energy Conservation Initiatives
- Appointed Director of Energy Conservation
- Developed campus Energy Use Policy
- Implemented comprehensive steam trap maintenance program
- Adopted LEED standards for all major construction new constructions and renovations

- Completed Business Instructional Facility to meet LEED Gold standards.
- Installed Energy recovery wheels at Conference Center, RAL, ARC Pool and Memorial Stadium
- Devoted over 30% of Deferred Maintenance project spending on energy related components

- Created retrocommissioning teams Became a USEPA “Energy Star” partner
- Installed a biodiesel tank at Garage & Car Pool
- Purchased three hybrid vehicles for the F&S service fleet
- Conducted studies on non-fuel effi cient vehicles to determine how to reduce idling time
- Meter buildings to decentralize the energy budget
