Photovoltaic Array and Green Roof
- Business Instructional Facility

Project Description
This project was a supplement to the campus Business Instructional Facility (BIF) Sustainable Energy Project . Equipment known as a photovoltaic (PV) array supports the LEED®-Gold design of the building by converting solar energy into electricity. The 3,700 square foot photovoltaic (PV) array produces approximately 55,000 kwh of electricity per year, or 5% to 7% of the annual consumption of the new facility. The $373,000 cost of the PV array was shared equally between:
  • Funds from the per-semester clean energy technology fee
(made available through a student referendum in 2003)
  • Funds from the State of Illinois Clean Energy Foundation.
In addition to the PV array, a student initiative led the way to 5,100 square feet of green (i.e. vegetative) roof on two different areas of the BIF. Building areas protected by the green roofs are expected to see 30% lower heating/cooling loads and perhaps a four to five times longer roof life, with the additional benefit of reducing stormwater runoff by as much as 50% to 75%.

The additional first cost of $75,000 for the green roof areas was funded entirely by the student-led and administered clean energy technology fee.
