Sustainable Energy Project
Business Instructional Facility
Clean Energy/LEED® Gold-level Design Standards
Project Description
On April 28, 2006 the University of Illinois broke ground for the new Business Instructional Facility (BIF), a 162,000 square foot, $62,000,000 classroom and administration complex. This is a high-profile building, both educationally and architecturally, serving and influencing the public, the faculty, and generations of college students. The facility was designed to LEED Gold-level standards, and is the University of Illinois' first effort towards integrated sustainable building design.
Project Goals
- The BIF has a direct energy impact by increasing the consumption of renewable energy resources thereby reducing the building's dependence on fossil fuels for heating and cooling the building.
-
As a visible, on-campus presence, the building serves an educational purpose, as the data on solar energy production and the other proposed sustainable systems will be available to students and University members.
-
As the University's first effort towards integrated sustainable building design, the building has impacted the University's building standards, making sustainable design for future buildings on the campus mandatory, thus ensuring energy conservation efforts are continued in the future.
